Whimsical. Educational. Historical. Inspirational. Zoological. These are just a few of the words you could use to describe our wonderful hand-carved gourds.

Our friend Alessandra owns the company and creates the designs for the hand-carved gourds, which include ornaments, trinket boxes, birdhouses, bird feeders and baskets. Alessandra, who lives in Florida, is originally from Peru, and she hires more than 200 Peruvian carvers to create these little masterpieces. As a member of the Free Trade Federation, she pays better than an average wage for Peru and is responsible for bettering the lives of all these families.

Peru has a history of thousands of years of carving gourds. Archeologists recently discovered a deity figure on a gourd carved over 4,000 years ago. Carvers served their individual communities by recording Andean celebrations, oral traditions, rituals, myths and weddings. No wonder the master carvers of today can still turn out such intricate works.

In addition to the designs that Alessandra has created, we have worked with her to design our own exclusive Copperhill gourd, depicting our mountains, our river and the tourist train that visits our town. We offer these special Copperhill gourd ornaments in both natural and red colors, and it’s hard to tell which is more popular.
